Groovy Greens took a two week break from giving out greens this & last week. Originally we thought a short vacation with my twin sister from the UK would be possible. Alas it was not to be, so I worked on projects around the greenhouse & the native flower garden at my house near the lettuce beds. We started the garden last year and needed to finish it off which entailed removing weeds, digging out the perennial weed roots, mulching & then this year, since we don't have plugs to plant, we sowed some cover crop. The idea being that the "crop" will feed the soil, displace the weeds prior to the natives being transplanted in the fall or spring. It will winter kill so it shouldn't be a problem long term.
We used leaf mulch from Painted Earth that will also feed the soil organisms and hopefully encourage a more fungal microbial population. Last year we also dipped the plugs (from Kind Earth Growers in Ottsville) into a solution with mycorrhizal fungi to help them get established. It seemed to work as the mountain mint, anise hyssop & other natives planted last year are amazing! We counted at least 10 different pollinators on the mint this weekend! Diversity rules!
Hope you enjoyed our first blog post! We're happy to answer questions and please leave a comment.
